Spot Evaluator

Jen is a certified UKC Spot evaluator !

The United Kennel Club (UKC) offers the SPOT program to help owners showcase their dogs as well-behaved assets to their community. Through a series of exercises, dogs demonstrate essential skills in a positive and enjoyable environment. Conducted by SPOT Evaluators, these tests ensure a fun and positive experience for both dogs and owners.

The UKC's philosophy of “Real Dogs for Real People” drives the SPOT program, emphasizing the importance of well-behaved canine companions in today’s urbanized and crowded environments. Responsible dog ownership is key, and the program aims to set an example for both dogs and their owners.

Over the past 20 years, the dynamics of dog ownership have changed significantly. Dogs and their owners face more restrictions and must adapt to modern standards of behavior. The SPOT program addresses this by focusing on appropriate on-leash behavior, socialization with other dogs, and basic obedience skills, all of which are crucial for today’s dog owners.

The program consists of 10 testing stations, each requiring the dog to perform a basic exercise. These exercises demonstrate behaviors that the public expects from well-behaved dogs. Dogs are rated at each station from “Outstanding” to “Needs Practice.” Training for the SPOT test can begin at any age, allowing owners to start preparing their dogs early.

The SPOT program is inclusive, welcoming all dogs, whether purebred or mixed breeds.

AKC Judge

AKC Fetch is a pass-fail noncompetitive test. The four levels of titles (Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Retriever) assess the ability of the dog to retrieve. In the Advanced and Retriever levels, the dog must respond correctly to signals. There is also a memory component in Advanced and Retriever because a retrieving bumper or ball is dropped (or thrown) behind a blind where it cannot be seen.

For each of the four titles, the dog must pass the test twice under two different approved AKC Fetch judges.
